The best thing about this rack, is that it actually keeps your soap dry in-between uses, resulting in longer lasting blocks.
You can either stand your block upright or flat, it is purely a personal preference. The beauty of the design is that there is minimal contact between the rack and the block at all times when it is holding a block, meaning air can get to as many areas of the block as possible between uses. Also, where there is less surface area contact, this results in less water pooling (sitting in grimy water), which results in a drier longer lasting block.
When soap gets wet, it needs a place to dry.
If you leave soap on a flat surface area, no air can get to the part of soap that is touching the surface. In addition, water molecules will begin to pool at the lowest point where the soap meets the surface.

Grab a nail brush or an old toothbrush, some warm water and some soap.
Give it a good SCRUB down, getting into all the valleys (you can even do this whilst you are scrubbing down).
Leave on the side to dry. You will be impressed with how well it comes up new.
